KCRW →
If you like eclectic music—especially World music—and you don’t know about KCRW…well, you should.  The have one of the best iPhone apps I’ve seen for a radio station.  Right now they’re playing Sara Tavares, Wet Cookies and Baaba Maal.  That rocks. They’re also doing their semi-annual fund-drive right now.  So subscribe.  I just did.

Carpe diem....
lickystickypickyme: On Aug. 12, 1985, Japan Airlines Flight 123 suffered mechanical failures after departing Tokyo. It struggled for 32 minutes to stay aloft but finally crashed into Mount Takamagahara, killing 520 people. Among the debris was found the company diary of 52-year-old shipping manager Hirotsugu Kawaguchi. Apparently he had spent the fateful half hour composing a seven-page letter...

Wow.  After years of watching Aliens, I just now noticed the sound at the very end of the credits, probably because I have headphones on and I was working on something else while the movie was ending.  Sounds like a facehugger skittering off.  Nice and creepy.

justinday: Last night our President made an impassioned plea to Congress, to the media, to corporate and special interests. He asked them to stop lining their pockets with wealth and power, just for a moment, and do what’s right for the people they’re supposed to be serving. They sat and listened politely, stood and clapped at the appropriate times, and then went back to business as usual. ...

The iPad raises the issue of how I want to keep track and access all of my data—or at least the most important stuff—across multiple platforms.  Ideally, I could do this without a cable and even remotely.  I want it to be automatic seamless for certain file times, like backups with TimeMachine.  And I don’t want to trust my data to the cloud.

Keep on hatin' haters
jacobjoaquin: justinday: You’ll all be lining up for one of these and singing its praises by summer. I think it’s brilliant. Though I never buy a 1st gen anything from Apple. I am tempted to buy this simply to be able to carry around and conveniently access and read the couple gigs of technical documents (PDF scientific papers, Powerpoint briefs, white papers in Word) I have.  Especially...

Face recognition ability inherited separately from... →
madeofstarstuff: Recognizing faces is an important social skill, but not all of us are equally good at it. Some people are unable to recognize even their closest friends (a condition called prosopagnosia), while others have a near-photographic memory for large numbers of faces. Now a twin study by collaborators at MIT and in Beijing, China shows that face recognition is heritable, and that it is...

What Scott Brown's Victory Really Means
robertreich: Get ready for the bromides. From the right: Just goes to show the country is against Democratic tax-and-spend. Obama’s agenda is in ruins, heath-care is over, the GOP has a good chance of taking back Congress next November. Now, even congessional Democrats will move to the right. From the left: Just goes to show Obama should never have cozied up to Wall Street, Big Pharma, and Big...
